A 14 year old girl has hanged herself after a teacher humiliated her in class for having her periods and staining her uniform.
The incident that occurred on Wednesday in Kabiangek, Bomet county led to protests from over 200 parents asking that action be taken against the teacher.
Police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the parents who were protesting outside the school as they called for the teachers head.
In 2017, Kenya passed a law that aims to ensure schoolgirls are provided with free sanitary towels but with the program yet to be rolled out, young girls are left to struggle to raise the amounts required to purchase the pads.
According to the girls mother, the teacher ordered the little girl to leave the class immediately saying that she was dirty to be allowed to study with the others.
“She had nothing to use as a pad. When the blood stained her clothes, she was told to leave the classroom and stand outside,” the mother said.
The mother explains that her daughter returned home from school looking sad and angered. She told her mother what had happened in school but when she went to fetch water, she took her own life.
Efforts by the girls parents to seek intervention from the police bore no fruits leading to peaceful protests from parents on Tuesday only to be dispersed by police using teargas.
And while the school’s headteacher declined to comment on the matter, the police regional chief Alex Shikondi insist that the circumstances of the girls death are still being investigated.
