Jose Mourinho quoted Nelson Mandela as he reflected on his time at Manchester United ahead of his return to Old Trafford as Tottenham manager on Wednesday night.

Mourinho’s Tottenham meet United in the manager’s first return to the touchline at Old Trafford since his sacking last December.

And, speaking on Tuesday at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game, Mourinho struck a philosophical tone.

‘This is a closed chapter for me,’ Mourinho said of being in charge at United. ‘I left the club, I took my time to process everything that happened, I took my time to prepare myself for the next challenge.’

Mourinho then referenced Nelson Mandela’s famous quote ‘I never lose, I either win or learn’, adding: ‘Honestly, United for me is in my book of experiences, it’s in my history book.

‘At United I won and I learned. My time after I left was a good time for me.’

United are struggling under Mourinho’s successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and are ninth in the table but go into the game just two points behind Spurs, who are fifth.

Tottenham have won their first three games under Mourinho’s guidance, qualifying for the last-16 of the Champions League as well as rising up the Premier League standings from 14th.

Mourinho continued: ‘It is not for me to analyse United now. I analyse them as an opponent, how they play. How can we beat them? How can they beat us? For me that is the important thing.’

Mourinho is excited about the prospect of being back at Old Trafford.

‘I have a great relationship with the Manchester United supporters. I went back as a pundit and I was humbled by such a beautiful reception.

‘Tomorrow I go back as the coach of the team that will try and beat Manchester United.

‘I understand that what they want is the exact opposite of what I want. Of course during the match I expect them to forget me.’
