A nine year old girl from Oloontoto village, Narok North was on Monday rescued by police officers and a children rights activist from the manyatta of a 40 year old man over claims the girl was forced to marry the old man.
The rescue operations were however faced by fierce rebellions from the man’s relatives.
Joshua Ole Kaputa, a children rights crusader who tipped police from Narok Police Station, is said to have warned John Nchoe, through his brothers, against marrying the nine-year-old with no success.
At the time of her rescue, the nine year old girl is said to have been married to the man for a week.
The girl told the police that she had tried to resist the marriage plans in order to pursue education but in vain.
On his side, the 40 year old man said he had already paid the bride price and that the girl’s parents had no problem with the marriage.
Ole Kaputa appealed to his tribesmen in Narok to end the old culture of child marriages and empower the girl child.
Narok County registered 40 per cent early pregnancies due to the culture of female genital mutilation and early marriages.
The culture persists despite the government illegalizing child marriages and FGM.
